Build.com’s Matt Risinger Talks About Termistops
How TermiSTOPS Protect New Homes Without Chemical Soil Treatments
Termites cause an estimated $5 billion in property damage each year in the United States, often entering homes through concealed gaps around slab edges, construction joints, and plumbing penetrations. In this episode of The Build Show, builder Matt Risinger and termite expert Joel Railing explain how termites can squeeze through openings as narrow as 1/64 of an inch. They emphasize the importance of maintaining at least eight inches of visible foundation around a home, making termite tunnels easier to detect during routine inspections.
The video demonstrates Termistop’s stainless-steel termite mesh system, a durable physical barrier installed around pipes, floor outlets, tubs, showers, and other slab penetrations. Because termites cannot squeeze through or chew through the finely woven mesh, the system helps transform the concrete slab into a continuous termite barrier without relying on conventional soil treatments that lose effectiveness over time. The presenters also recommend treating the lower three feet of wood framing with a borate product and conducting annual inspections, creating a practical, affordable, and long-lasting termite-management strategy.
