Austin ADU Project Uses Termistop for Sustainable Termite Prevention
Installing a Termistop on a plumbing line before the concrete slab is poured.
Project Overview
An Austin homeowner wanted to add a new Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to their property. They needed an effective termite-prevention option that wouldn't delay the construction schedule. They also wanted a sustainable solution that didn't require them to dump gallons of pesticides on their property.
Since the project was designed with a concrete slab foundation, they chose Termistops to protect utility penetrations in the slab. It's a proven, sustainable solution that's easy to install and comes with a guarantee.
Project Details
Location: Austin, Texas
Structure Type: Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU)
Installer: ABC Home & Commercial Services, Inc.
Foundation Type: Monolithic Concrete Slab
Products Installed:
Four (4) 2-inch Termistop® Collars
One (1) 3-inch Termistop® Collar
One (1) Termimesh® Shower Blockout
The Challenge
Subterranean termites cause billions in damage each year. They often enter buildings through hidden spots that stay concealed after construction.
Utility penetrations in concrete slabs are a common way for termites to enter. They create hidden paths right into the building.
For this ADU project, the construction team wanted a solution that would:
Protect vulnerable utility penetrations before the slab was poured.
Reduce reliance on chemical soil treatments.
Minimize installation time and construction delays.
Support future termite inspections and monitoring.
Provide long-term, non-corrosive protection compatible with modern building practices.
The Solution
The project team picked ABC Home & Commercial Services to install Termistop stainless steel termite barriers. They placed these barriers around key plumbing and utility openings before pouring the concrete.
After the plumbing and other pre-slab utilities were in place, each was fitted with a Termistop flange. The shower drain assembly was protected using a special Termimesh Shower Blockout.
After the slab was poured, concrete and stainless steel barriers work together to keep termites out of the building.
Additionally, the poured foundation design provides a clean 6-inch inspection zone around the structure, enabling future visual monitoring of termite activity.
Why This Approach Matters
Stainless steel termite barriers offer a strong, physical way to keep termites out. Unlike traditional treatments that use only chemicals, these barriers last as long as the building does.
Termistop benefits include:
Long-term protection at critical termite entry points.
Reduced dependence on chemical treatments.
No ongoing replenishment or retreatment requirements.
Compatibility with sustainable construction practices.
Enhanced visibility for future termite inspections.
For architects, builders, and homeowners wanting strong termite protection, adding Termistop physical barriers during construction helps keep termites out for good.
Installation Highlights
Fast installation during pre-pour construction.
Ideal application for monolithic slab construction.
Protection focused on critical utility penetrations.
Minimal impact on project schedule.
Supports a clean, inspectable foundation perimeter.
Durable stainless steel barrier technology designed for long-term performance.
Results
The project was completed with a simple, efficient installation that protected the ADU's most vulnerable termite entry points before the concrete slab was poured.
Using just four 2-inch Termistop flanges, one 3-inch flange, and a Termimesh Shower Blockout, the installation took less than an hour.
The result is a sustainable solution that keeps termites out for good. It focuses on effective exclusion and enables easy future inspections.
